| Elephant Hill |

Located on the west bank of the Lijiang River,and the southeast part of Guilin,Elephone Hill is a famous symbol in splendid scenic Guilin. It looks like an elephant dipping its snout into the Lijiang River, thus, is given the name of "Elephant Hill". It is the masterpiece of nature, composed of pure limestone deposited on seabed 360 million years ago. |
It is the most important landscape around Guilin,and also is the symbol of Guilin city. With an height of 200 meters, the hill towers above 55m the water, measuring 108m in length and 100m in width.
A cave between the trunk and the legs of the elephant ,just like a full moon. People named it "Moon-over-Water Cave". |

The scene that the surface of the water shimmer in the moonlight , is extremely enchanting. On the walls inside this cave, over 70 inscriptions from the Tang and Song dynasties were found, praising the beauty of hills and water nearby. Halfway up the hill lies another cave, which goes through the hill and serves as the eyes of the elephant.Visitors can overlook the beautiful scene of Guilin city in this cave.

On the top of the hilll there stands a pagoda named Puxian Pagoda. Built in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), it looks like the handle of a sword. In and out of the cave there are many carvings and inscriptions, the most well-known piece one is a poem by LuYou (1125-1210), one of the four great poets of the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279). |
